World Business Briefing: France: Vivendi Profit Increases 32

Vivendi said its first-quarter profit rose 32 percent, spurred by demand for its World of Warcraft video game and subscriber growth at the pay-television unit. Net income rose to 932 million euros ($1.27 billion) from 707 million euros ($957.5 million) a year earlier, Vivendi said. First-quarter sales rose 5.3 percent, to 5.02 billion euros ($6.8 billion) from 4.77 billion euros ($6.47 billion) a year earlier. Profit at Vivendi Games surged to 107 million euros ($145 million) from 23 million euros ($31.1 million) a year earlier. The unit sold almost 2.4 million copies of the expansion pack to World of Warcraft the first day it went on sale in January. Profit at the pay-television unit Canal Plus jumped fivefold, to 164 million euros ($222.1 million). Profit at the mobile phone unit SFR, Vivendi’s largest business, slipped 3.5 percent, to 643 million euros ($871 million). Profit was down at the Universal Music Group, hurt by falling CD sales.
