He said he would show his ready to wear collection in Paris in October as scheduled but step down as chief designer after his haute couture collection in January 2008.

“I have decided that this is the perfect moment to say “addio” to the fashion world,” he said. The announcement came just a month after Valentino held three days of extravagant parties, exhibitions and fashion shows in Rome to celebrate his 45th anniversary, while denying that they were the prelude to retirement.

Now 75, he has long hinted he might resign to make way for a younger designer. Names bandied about in the contest to be his successor include Alessandra Fachinetti, the former designer for Gucci, another iconic Italian fashion house. Only last month Valentino said he would step down “when I am ready” and insisted he had no “immediate plans” to quit.

Womens Wear Daily said “The designer’s future at the company has been the subject of much speculation over the last year, especially following Permira’s acquisition of Valentino Fashion Group this past spring”. Permira is a European private equity group.

Valentino recently observed that the secret of his success was that “many women want to be extraordinary and feminine. That will never change. What I want is for a woman to walk into a room and everyone turns to look at her, I want a woman to be noticed and always arouse admiration.”

At his anniversary celebrations fellow designers such as Donatella Versace, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford paid tribute to Valentino, along with stars of the film and pop music world such as Uma Thurman and Mick Jagger. Ms Thurman said she loved Valentino because “his dresses are so elegant and feminine. They are a pleasure and a privilege to wear”.

He was criticised however by some conservationists for using classical and historic Rome buildings for his anniversary shows and parties, including the Roman Forum, where he erected a reconstruction of a Roman temple for a dinner at a reported cost of 135,000 pounds, the Ara Pacis, or Altar of Peace, a monument on the Tiber embankment celebrating the achievements of the Emperor Augustus, the Renaissance era Villa Borghese, and a twelfth century basilica near the Vatican.

At the closing anniversary show last month July Valentino, in tears in his trademark white suit, was given a standing ovation to the strains of Puccini. Andre Leon Talley, editor-at-large of US Vogue, was heard to remark “That seemed the show of a young man with a great future ahead of him”.

Today Valentino said that his anniversary celebrations had been an “unrepeatable magic moment”. He said his future was “full of new ventures and interests” which would still be linked to the world of fashion.

He said he would support “institutions which promote the study of design and the art of fashion”, and hoped that “the team running the fashion house which bears my name will do so in manner of which I can be proud”.Read Full Article Valentino and Partner Will Be Leaving His Fashion HouseThe news ended speculation that has buzzed around the fashion house since a gala in Rome in July celebrating the iconic Italian couturier’s 45 years in the business.Read Full Article External News for: valentinoKristen Stewart in olive green Valentino at 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' New ... - Examiner.comUSA TodayKristen Stewart in olive green Valentino at 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' New ...Examiner.comHer new red carpet style involves Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, J.
