The Philippines: Protesters Demand Arroyo’s Ouster

Thousands of protesters ? leftists, labor groups, opposition members, students, teachers and representatives of the powerful Roman Catholic Church ? took to the streets in Manila, the capital, and 14 other cities to demand President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s ouster as the country observed the 22nd anniversary of the popular uprising that toppled Ferdinand E. Marcos. In Manila, about 4,000 marched. One group was blocked by the police from approaching the People Power Monument along the main thoroughfare. Mrs. Arroyo, who has survived three impeachment attempts and four attempted coups in her seven years, still holds the support of the powerful military.
