‘Stolen’ Greek vase returned to Italy

<b>ROME</b> This Greek vase, 2,500 years old, was returned to Italy by the Metropolitan Museum in New York as part of an Italian campaign against illegal trafficking in antiquities. The Euphronius Krater, which is decorated with scenes from Homer’s <i>Iliad</i> and <i>Odyssey</i>, was bought by the museum from Robert Hecht, the American art dealer who is on trial in Italy for knowingly acquiring allegedly looted artefacts, which he denies. Italy said that the vase was stolen from a site near Rome. <i>(AP)</i>

Sporting dark sunglasses and holding hands, Nicolas Sarkozy and his supermodel-turned-singer girlfriend Carla Bruni arrived in Luxor yesterday for a private visit to Egypt, before the French President begins talks with Hosni Mubarak, his Egyptian counterpart, on Monday. They were greeted on landing by Sameer Farag, the head of the Luxor supreme local council of antiquities, and whisked off to the Old Winter Palace hotel on the east bank of the Nile.
