World News The Times December 19, 2006 World in Brief Heater gas poisons victims of storm

WASHINGTON One man was killed and more than 100 people were poisoned by carbon monoxide from heaters after a storm in the northwest of the US that left six others dead and a million homes without power (Tim Reid writes). The storm that hit Washington state and Oregon caused a “carbon monoxide epidemic” from the indoor use of generators, a doctor said. A state of emergency was called in Washington after some areas were left short of food.

Migrants drown

ST-LOUIS At least 80 African migrants who were sailing to the Canary Islands in Spain in the hope of finding work died after their boat capsized twice off the Senegal coast. About 25 people were rescued and an official said that the death toll could rise. The small fishing boat had drifted for 10 days. (AP)

Berlusconi surgery

ROME Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s former Prime Minister, has undergone surgery in an American hospital a month after he had a heart scare. The ANSA news agency said that the operation was simple and a success. Speculation has been rife that Mr Berlusconi would need a pacemaker. (Reuters)

Trafficker jailed

DUNKIRK A British man of Kosovan origin has been jailed for ten months for trying to smuggle 18 Chinese immigrants into Britain in a lorry last Saturday. He was also banned from entering French territory for two years. The migrants were taken to a detention centre to await deportation. (AFP)

Farmland saved

BEIJING The Government has banned developers from building golf courses, luxury homes and race courses on arable land. Xinhua news agency said that the new regulations, which even restrict the placement of cemeteries, were intended to protect China’s rapidly shrinking farmland. (Reuters)

Balkans partners

BUCHAREST Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia- Hercegovina, along with Moldova and the Serbian province of Kosovo, are to enter the Central European Free Trade Association. They will join Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Macedonia in the association, which was formed in 1992. (AFP)

ROME A giant mirror has brought sunshine to a village in the Italian Alps. Viganella lies in a valley so steep that it hardly receives any sunlight from November to February. The 5x8 metre (16ftx26ft) mirror, which cost €100,000 (£67,200), tracks and reflects the sun’s movement from a nearby mountain. (Reuters)
