World Business Briefing: Qantas Chairwoman Decides To Retire

Margaret A. Jackson, the chairwoman of Qantas Airways, who was one of the proponents of a failed attempt to take the airline private, will retire, a company spokesman said. Ms. Jackson, 54, told the board that she would not seek re-election at the airlines annual meeting in October, said Simon Rushton, a spokesman for Qantas. The buyout attempt, led by the Macquarie Bank and TPG, collapsed two weeks ago when investors rejected a cash offer of 5.45 Australian dollars a share as too low. The buyout group says it will not make another bid. Ms. Jackson joined the board in July 1992 and was appointed chairwoman in August 2000.
