World Briefing | The Americas: Mexico: Government Accepts Talks With Guerrillas Who Bombed Pipelines

The government said it was willing to negotiate with a guerrilla group that blew up several oil and gas pipelines last year, a day after the guerrillas offered to suspend attacks. The group, Ejército Popular Revolucionario, or Popular Revolutionary Army, said in a communiqué on Monday that it was willing to open a dialogue with the government through intermediaries. It has been seeking the release of two members it maintains were kidnapped last May. Interior Minister Juan Camilo Mouriño said the government would accept the proposal if the guerrillas ceased their campaign of sabotage but did not offer them amnesty.
