World Briefing | The Americas: Haiti: Government Will Ask For Duvalier’s Money


The president of Haiti, René Préval, rejected an apology from the former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier and said the government would ask a court to recover millions in state funds believed stolen during Mr. Duvaliers 15 years in power. Mr. Préval said Mr. Duvaliers surprise apology for past abuses was welcome but inadequate. Mr. Duvalier, who fled the country in 1986 during a popular uprising, ended years of silence over the weekend with a radio address in which he apologized for wrongs committed under his rule.
