World Briefing | Asia: Kashmir: Strays Saved From Poisoning


The authorities in Srinagar, Indian Kashmir’s main city, canceled plans to poison all its stray dogs, nearly 100,000, with strychnine. Syed Haq Nawaz, commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, said officials would instead work on a plan to sterilize the strays. He gave no reasons, but animal rights groups had vowed to go to court. About 500 dogs had already been killed by Friday.
