World Briefing | Asia: Japan: Miscarriage After Rejection By 8 Hospitals


A 38-year-old woman in Nara Prefecture who was six months pregnant and had abdominal pain miscarried in a fire department ambulance after eight hospitals turned her down. The ambulance then collided with a minivan on its way to the ninth, officials said. No one was injured in the accident. The hospitals told the ambulance that their medical staffs were busy with other patients, The Daily Yomiuri reported. Japan’s health minister promised to try to resolve the country’s shortage of doctors, particularly obstetricians, and especially in rural areas.
