World Briefing | Asia: Afghanistan: Bitter Winter Claims More Than 900 Lives

Cold, snowstorms and avalanches have killed 926 people as the country suffers what is thought to be the worst winter in three decades, the authorities said. Almost half the deaths, 462, have been in the hard-hit western province of Herat, and dozens of people there have had hands or feet amputated because of frostbite. Over all, more than 316,000 cattle have died and 833 houses have been destroyed. The cold spell has eased in recent days, but officials worry that people living in difficult to reach, remote areas will suffer from a lack of aid and that more deaths will be reported as roads reopen.
