Hunters will be allowed to kill 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off eastern Canada this year, the government said, 5,000 more than last year. Phil Jenkins, a spokesman for the Fisheries and Oceans Department, said the herd was “healthy and abundant” and in no danger of shrinking. Animal rights advocates said the number was unsustainable and consider the annual hunt cruel. “It’s a national embarrassment,” said Sheryl Fink of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “Is killing baby seals really what Canadians want to be known for?”
