World Briefing | Africa: South Africa: Utility Seeks Big Price Increase


Still reeling from severe power shortages that struck the country in January, Eskom, the state-controlled utility, has asked regulators for a stunning 60 percent increase in the price of electricity, citing higher energy costs and what it called “demand-side management.” Economists say the private sector has been unwilling to invest heavily in power generation because the price of electricity was too low to generate profits. After public hearings, the regulators will decide how much of a price increase to grant.
