World Briefing | Africa: 2 More U.S. Priests Align With African Anglicans

Deepening the disarray in the Anglican Communion over homosexuality, the archbishop of Kenya, Benjamin Nzimbi, consecrated two American priests as bishops of the Anglican Church of Kenya to serve disaffected Episcopalians in the United States. The new bishops, William Murdoch of Massachusetts, at right in photo, and Bill Atwood of Texas, left, will minister to Americans who have grown alienated from the Episcopal Church, the American branch of Anglicanism, which takes a liberal stance on homosexuality. The consecration at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi followed similar consecrations of Americans by the archbishops of Nigeria and Rwanda. But those consecrations across regional boundaries have not been officially recognized by the archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the worldwide communion of 77 million members.
