Vital Signs: Childhood: Timing Found To Matter In Children’s TV HabitsIt has long been known that too much television is bad for children, but a new study suggests that the timing of the exposure is crucial. (Pediatrics)Researchers interviewed parents about their childrens viewing habits at 30 to 33 months and then again at 5 ½ years, and assessed the childrens behavioral and social skills with well-established rating scales. They also noted whether the 5 ½-year-old had television in the bedroom. More than two hours of TV a day at ages 2 and 5 was associated with behavioral problems at age 5, but not with weaker social skills. Those who were exposed to two hours or more only at age 5 were more likely to have problems with social skills, but not with behavior. For those exposed only at age 2, there were almost no discernible effects on either behavior or social interactions. Dr. Cynthia S. Minkovitz, a co-author of the study, which was published in the Oct. 2 issue of Pediatrics, said parents should consider removing television from the childs bedroom where possible. Like all activities, TV should be used in moderation, said Dr. Minkovitz, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The study confirmed that children watch plenty of TV. One in six children watched for more than two hours a day during at least one of the time periods, and more than 40 percent had television in their bedroom at age 5 ½.
