Times Square Rocked By Early-morning Explosion

New York City police cordoned off a section of Times Square this morning after a blast at a military recuitment office, apparently caused by a small explosive device. Fox News reported that a second unexploded device had been found.

The blast at 3.45am (0845 GMT) sent early-bird commuters running for cover. No deaths were reported, although one police officer was said to have received minor burns to his legs.

Police officers immediately flooded Midtown Manhattan armed with automatic rifles and flanked by bomb-sniffing dogs. Police closed down all streets between 46th and 42nd and 6th and 8th avenues, as well as all subways.

The tiny Times Square recruitment office stands on a traffic island between Broadway and Seventh Avenue at 43rd Street and is perhaps Americas best known. Set up in 1946, it holds the record for the most recruits of any walk-in centre.
