That Perfect Day - It’s Within Your Grasp

World News The Times December 18, 2006 Have a field day: you could be among those to welcome the FA Cup Final back to Wembley (Hugh Routledge/The Times) Christmas appeal That perfect day - its within your grasp Rosemary Bennett, Social Affairs Correspondent Dinner in the US draws the most bids Cup Final day out is a huge attraction Listen to Ben Macintyre talking to Ros Armitage, director of the Red Cross in the UK

With not much time left before the hammer comes down in the Times charity auction, bids have been pouring in, raising a total of £34,000 so far for the British Red Cross.

The chance to dine at Gordon Ramsay’s New York restaurant, The London, has attracted the most interest and the highest sum offered so far. The winner and a guest will cross the Atlantic by Virgin’s premium economy class for lunch at the bar and dinner in the restaurant, with wines selected by Ramsay.

There have been nearly as many bids for a day at a Test match with Christopher Martin-Jenkins, our chief cricket correspondent. A trip to the FA Cup Final with a Times photographer is in third place.

Under the rules, all bids are sealed and we are unable to reveal the highest amounts tendered so far. However, at midday tomorrow, when the auction closes, all those who have submitted sealed bids will be told by e-mail the total they have to beat, and given 24 hours to improve their offer.

Every time you bid, you raise £3 for the British Red Cross — and you can make sure that you are in with the best possible chance by bidding more than once.

The auction has been organised on our behalf by Auctionair, which has donated a range of high-tech goodies for which you can also bid. The 46in Sony Bravia flat-screen television, worth £2,799, has attracted the most bids so far, with the Sony Viao laptop, worth £1,699, in second place.

Among the other most popular days out with Times staff, a day with a photographer from the newspaper is highly sought after, as is an all-expenses-paid trip to a show during Paris Fashion Week with our fashion editor, Lisa Armstrong.

The chance for one adult and two children to go behind the scenes at the Blue Peter studio and meet the presenters is also attracting many bids.

Have you ever wanted a glimpse behind the scenes at the world’s most famous newspaper? You can bid for five places at a champagne reception with the Editor of The Times, Robert Thomson, to be followed by a tour of the News International printing presses.

Perhaps something more high-minded would appeal? Ten places are on offer at a reception to meet Matthew Parris and other opinion- formers who grace our pages.

Those keen for guidance about choosing wine will be vying for a tasting tutored by Jane MacQuitty, followed by lunch for two at the River Café in London. A day at a Champneys luxury health spa in the company of Amanda Ursell, the Times’s nutritionist, will tempt the figure-conscious.

There is no shortage of nightlife to bid for. A trip to an opening night with our chief theatre critic, Benedict Nightingale, is on offer, and there’s also the chance of a night out in the West End, including dinner and a show, with Libby Purves. Ben Hoyle, our arts reporter, will take you to a West End film premiere and the party that follows.
