Really Private Equity Firm Has Sights On Mega League

Business The Times February 03, 2007 Really private equity firm has sights on mega league Siobhan Kennedy Britain’s CVC is a private equity firm with a capital P.

From its headquarters in London’s Strand district, the firm has quietly been involved in some of the most high- profile buyouts in the UK including Debenhams, Formula 1 and the AA.

But while others such as Stephen Schwarzman, of Blackstone, and David Rubenstein, of Carlyle, are forever proselytising about the private equity industry, CVC’s founder and managing partner Donald Mackenzie hates media coverage.

CVC was founded in 1981 as Citicorp’s European private equity arm, and in 1993 it completed its own management buyout, led by Mr Mackenzie.

CVC Asia Pacific was formed in 1999 and the group is also poised to announce a big push in the US.

CVC has made no secret of its plan to bulk up in retail. Last year the firm hired Simon Laffin, the ex-finance director of Safeways, as its European retail adviser.

If CVC pulls off its bid for Sainsbury’s it will be its biggest deal and take the UK private equity firm into the mega league, alongside KKR, Blackstone and Texas Pacific.
