Old-School Publicist Is Mourned By StarsThe New York film world, with its independent film companies and heaving publicity apparatus, plays big when it comes to the Oscar spectacle, but it got a little smaller this week. Robert Garlock, a publicist who represented some of Hollywoods leading actresses and actors, lived for movies, but did it while living in New York. He died on Sunday at the age of 41 from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. As the partner who ran the talent division at 42 West, a public relations firm in New York known for its A-list clientele and Oscar-campaign prowess, Mr. Garlock was a throwback to the studio-lot days when press agents were involved with every decision, from the choice of stylists to photographers for magazine photo shoots. Low key and allergic to the hysterics that generally go with representing celebrities, Mr. Garlock also worked on the publicity campaigns of more than 40 films. He had a busy Oscar season last time around when two of his clients, Kate Winslet and Penélope Cruz, were nominated for best actress. Mr. Garlock, who made a specialty out of calming anxious nerves, never displayed any himself. On the phone this week Ms. Winslet was bereft about the death of Mr. Garlock, whom she had known since she was 17. It wasnt just holding our handbags while we posed for pictures, Ms. Winslet said. He was literally holding our hands the whole way, navigating the tough situations, the great times, and then laughing at the sheer chaos of it all. Mr. Garlock liked Los Angeles, but he most definitely did not want to live there. While he was fascinated with film from a young age, after moving to New York from Ohio, he fell in love with the other cultural aspects of New York, particularly its theater scene and museums. Mr. Garlock, who spent 16 years at PMK/HBH as a publicist before joining 42 West in May 2005, did not drive a car and felt that New York, with its nexus of press and publications, was a perfectly appropriate place to manage the image and careers of his clients, whose ranks also included Uma Thurman, Hilary Swank, Sigourney Weaver, Clive Owen and Hugh Grant. Ms. Thurman said she was Mr. Garlocks first client, and that after 15 years he was one of her closest friends. He constantly sought to defuse conflict, to clear the path for seeing the best in others, she said. Robert loved, loved, the movies, and took it all in, but whenever I was having a hard time in my personal life, he would be the first person on my doorstep.
