No More Lovers’ Tiffs, George Stays At M&S

So what’s the latest in the on-off relationship between George Davies and Stuart Rose?

Recent reports had suggested that Davies, chairman of Marks & Spencer’s Per Una brand, was set to resign in November, which would have been his second resignation from the retailer in two years. First time around the pair made it up after what Rose described as a “lovers’ tiff”, and Davies agreed to stay on, albeit as chairman rather than chief executive of Per Una, which is now run by his daughters.

It looks as though it’s much the same this time. I hear the firebrand design expert met up with the M&S boss last week to assure him that news of his departure was premature.

“George is going nowhere. He remains chairman of Per Una,” confirms an M&S source.

My understanding is that he will stay with M&S at least until Christmas and, as he has to give a year’s notice, some time beyond.

Tasty deal on menu for upmarket burger chain

I hear that Hamburger Union, a chain of posh burger restaurants, is quietly seeking a buyer ready to part with £5 million to £10 million. The word is that Coffer Corporate Leisure has been appointed to advise the company after an approach from a mystery suitor. The chain, which has six eateries and an overseas franchise business, is probably hoping to cash in on the sudden upsurge in interest in upmarket burger joints led by the Gourmet Burger Kitchen chain. But the timing of the move strikes me as odd. I wonder if it is any coincidence that the approach came after a favourable mention in this column? I look forward to my commission.

As grand departures go, it was perhaps not quite what Sir Christopher Bland had in mind. The BT chairman will today mark his formal retirement from the group at the annual meeting in Gateshead. I understand the choice of venue is part of BT’s policy of giving equal access to all investors. Not so such much farewell as Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

Do people not read the papers? (On second thoughts, don’t answer that.) The demise of Metronet Rail might be required reading for much of the population but you’d have thought people wanting to work for the company might have noticed its travails. According to Metronet’s website, the top search from visitors to the site is job vacancies.
