NBC Names New Chief For News ProgramLess than a week after NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams lost the monthly ratings race to ABC for the first time, NBC announced yesterday that it was replacing Mr. Williamss executive producer with Alexandra Wallace, a vice president of the news division who has had broad oversight for the program since January of last year. The New York TimesRelated ABC News Wins in Sweeps Month (March 2, 2007) With Anchors Still Settling In, NBC Feels Pressure at the Top (March 1, 2007) Readers’ Opinions Forum: Television Ms. Wallace, 41, who came to NBC in 2005 after a decade as a producer at CBS News, replaces John Reiss, who had been Mr. Williamss executive producer for almost two years. NBC executives have said that the change was in the works for some time and was not made in response to the most recent ratings figures. Still, in assuming hands-on, day-to-day responsibility for Mr. Williamss program, Ms. Wallace will be charged with maintaining the programs lead in the ratings over World News With Charles Gibson on ABC for the television season that began last September — while trying to staunch a dropoff in the programs viewership. The 9.3 million viewers Nightly News has drawn on average each night this past year represents about a half million more than World News, but about a half million fewer than Nightly was drawing when compared with the same period a year ago, according to Nielsen Media Research. I want to maintain the Nightly News first-place position, Ms. Wallace, who will retain her vice presidents title, said in a telephone interview yesterday. Thats what my goal is. Asked if viewers would notice much difference in the program on her watch, Ms. Wallace said: I dont have any major changes planned. I think we put on a really strong broadcast already. If anything, it will be slight tinkers here or there. I dont think its broken, she added a moment later. I dont have any grand list of 35 things I plan on changing. As an executive producer, she said, you bring to it all your past experiences and also your life experiences, so, even without realizing it, viewers might see a little of who I am reflected in the pieces the program may occasionally do. Informing that perspective, Ms. Wallace said, is that she is a working mother of two young children: a daughter, 5, and a son, 3. She lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with her husband, Kenny Creed, the head of the lower school at Brearley, the private school. Ms. Wallace first came to NBC in March 2005, as executive producer of Weekend Today and a senior producer of Today. At CBS, she was most recently a senior producer for The Early Show and CBS This Morning, and, before that, a producer for the CBS Evening News With Dan Rather.
