Miners Dig Graves For Blast Victims

DONETSK A miner helps to dig a grave for a colleague killed by a gas explosion at the Zasyadko coalmine in the eastern Ukraine on Sunday which left at least 89 people dead – post-Soviet Ukraine’s worst coalmining disaster. Flags flew at half-mast across the nation as hope of finding anyone still alive underground virtually vanished. Eleven miners remain unaccounted for after the methane blast. “This is a mournful day for all of us. We are digging graves for our dead comrades,” Stanislav Omelyanenko, a mine electrician, said at a cemetery on the outskirts of the mine. (AP)
