Lockheed And Northrop Report Higher Earnings

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (AP) — Two military contractors, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and the Northrop Grumman Company, posted higher fourth-quarter earnings Thursday as government spending in areas like military hardware and information and technology remained strong.

Earnings for military contractors have risen steadily in recent years behind big spending increases on military programs and equipment as the Pentagon fights wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Lockheed, the nations largest military contractor, has been one of the biggest benefactors, supplying things like fighter jets and homeland security equipment.

For the fourth quarter of 2006, Lockheeds net earnings rose 28 percent, to $729 million, or $1.68 a share, compared with $568 million, or $1.29 a share a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast a profit of $1.46 a share.

Revenue rose 6 percent, to $10.84 billion from $10.23 billion, on improved sales in most of its business segments.

Sales grew across the companys business units, including a somewhat unexpected gain in aeronautics that helped prompt Lockheed to raise its earnings outlook for 2007 by 20 cents, to $5.80 to $6 a share.

But Lockheed, which is based in Bethesda, Md., lowered its sales outlook to $40.25 billion to $41.25 billion, down from its previous forecast of $41 billion to $42 billion, because of a change in accounting for the companys new joint rocket launch venture with the Boeing Company.

Northrop, which makes ships, missiles and aircraft for the military, said its fourth-quarter profit rose 37 percent on higher sales and improved margins.

The company earned $453 million, or $1.28 a share, compared with $331 million, or 92 cents a share, a year earlier. Earnings from continuing operations totaled $457 million, or $1.29 a share, in the latest period. Revenue climbed 5 percent to $8.02 billion, from $7.67 billion.

Analysts expected a profit of $1.26 a share on sales of $8.05 billion, according to Thomson Financial.

Northrop is based in Los Angeles.
