Larry Wachtel, Market Analyst, Is Dead At 77Larry Wachtel, a stock market analyst whose humor and trademark Brooklyn accent kept radio listeners attuned to the ups and downs of the markets for more than three decades in the New York area, died on Sunday in Valhalla, N.Y. He was 77 and lived in Yonkers. The cause was a heart ailment, said his wife, Iris Wachtel. Mr. Wachtel was best known for his commentary on the stock markets, broadcast three times a day on the New York radio station 1010 WINS-AM. His knack for explaining complex concepts helped translate finance for a broad audience. Mr. Wachtel recorded his radio segments on top of his day job as a financial analyst for Prudential Financial and later for its successor Wachovia, from which he retired in 2005 as a senior vice president. He stayed on as a consultant and filed market reports up until last week. Lawrence Marvin Wachtel was born on July 2, 1930, and grew up in Brooklyn. He received a journalism degree from Long Island University in 1952. After a stint in journalism, he answered a newspaper advertisement in 1962 that led to a job at Bache & Company, where he became the firms chief market analyst; he stayed at Bache and its successors until his death. In 1972, Mr. Wachtel was invited to record a play-by-play of the markets for WINS, which was trying to fill airtime. The station soon offered him a regular slot, which he occupied until 2005. In addition to his wife of 47 years, Mr. Wachtel is survived by a son, Philip Wachtel of Scarsdale, and two grandchildren.
