Indonesia Wins Battle To Recover Soeharto MillionsINDONESIA is set to launch legal action to recover hundreds of millions stolen by former president Soehartos family, after a Guernsey Islands court froze a bank account of the ex-presidents son. The court has agreed to freeze nearly $A60 million of "Tommy" Soehartos funds, granting Indonesia three months to start a case against him in Jakarta and limited access to documents detailing the source of the funds. Attorney-General Hendarman Supandji said he had also ordered lawsuits against several public foundations once chaired by president Soeharto. Funded by billions of tax dollars, much of the foundations funds were allegedly channelled into the Soeharto family coffers. Several probes into corrupt activities by Tommy Soeharto and other family members were continuing, Mr Supandji said. In the Guernsey Islands case, Indonesia claimed Tommy Soehartos companies had unlawfully received funds from public foundations and exploited a monopoly on Indonesias clove industry. It alleged the funds in the Channel Islands tax haven were obtained fraudulently. A Government spokesman said the favourable court decision gave Indonesia a clear mandate to pursue the case and a chance to recover the funds, but much work remained to be done in a short time.
