In Crisis, Or Just An Egoist? (1 Letter)

To the Editor:

Re “Crisis? Maybe He’s a Narcissistic Jerk” (Mind, Jan. 15): I was intrigued by Dr. Richard A. Friedman’s contrarian piece on what he calls the “myth” of midlife crisis. In fact, the syndrome shows up very clearly in the psychological instruments my firm routinely uses to evaluate and develop potential leaders. Yes, the midlife crisis is not as widespread as commonly believed. It is, however, a very real issue for overachievers, most of whom measure their success according to the passage of time, fretting perhaps, in the words of George Bernard Shaw, that “In heaven an angel is nobody in particular.”
