Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The ’80sGuitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s PS2 Activision Classification: G RRP: $70 Rating: 3.5/5 Note the word "encore" in the title. Its an admission that this is the same game as Guitar Hero II, with just a selection of 30 new tracks from the decade of big hair, skinny ties and shameless excess. With no new modes, characters or venues, no bonus tracks to unlock and a smaller selection of music than its predecessor, Encore feels overpriced. But that doesnt mean it isnt still great fun. As with its predecessors, Encores genius lies in how convincing it feels to strum the plastic guitar. Note patterns never feel arbitrary, giving the illusion that you are a rock god. Guitar Hero is also wonderfully accessible and guaranteed to enliven even the dullest shindig. If you can afford two guitars, jamming with mates is fantastic fun, especially with one player on lead and the other on bass or rhythm. How much value you derive from Encore depends a lot on your musical preferences. Unfortunately, the game is unlikely to fully satisfy the most ardent guitar heroes because its eclectic track list spans diverse genres and contains several puzzling inclusions (and disappointing omissions). Some of the most effective tracks include Quiet Riots Bang Your Head (Metal Health), Twisted Sisters I Wanna Rock, Scandals The Warrior, Asias Heat of the Moment, the Romantics What I Like About You and Poisons Nothin but a Good Time. I Ran (So Far Away) by Flock of Seagulls and one-hit wonder Turning Japanese by the Vapors will also be crowd-pleasers, although theyre not as well suited to the game. Unfortunately, tracks from the likes of Iron Maiden, the Police and the Dead Kennedys are not well known, and many will lament the absence of era-defining artists such as Guns N Roses and Van Halen. Its also strange that 70s hits Radar Love and Ballroom Blitz are featured.
