Guilty Plea In Refco Fraud Case

Robert C. Trosten, the former finance chief at the futures trader Refco Inc., pleaded guilty on Wednesday to helping hide hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

Mr. Trosten, 38, entered a guilty plea to fraud and conspiracy charges in Federal District Court in Manhattan, a month before he was to go on trial. He agreed to cooperate with the government in exchange for leniency at sentencing and to forfeit $2.4 billion and property he owns.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and my conduct,” Mr. Trosten told Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald at his plea hearing.

The former chairman and chief executive, Phillip R. Bennett, pleaded guilty Feb. 15 and will be sentenced in May.

Mr. Trosten’s plea leaves two men remaining to face trial. Refco’s former president, Tone N. Grant, goes on trial March 17, and a longtime lawyer for Refco, Joseph P. Collins, faces a separate fraud and conspiracy trial. Both men deny wrongdoing.
