Guild Allows Writers To Work On N.A.A.C.P. Awards

LOS ANGELES — Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America West, said the union’s board voted to approve an interim agreement to let next month’s N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards proceed with guild writers and without the threat of pickets.

At a news conference Tuesday at the guild’s Los Angeles headquarters, Mr. Verrone added that the board had not yet voted on any agreement for the Grammys, but he reminded reporters that it had already decided against granting approval for the Academy Awards ceremony.

In describing the guild’s rationale, he said that an organization dedicated to social change like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that also gives out televised awards should be treated differently from “organizations that give out televised awards that happen” to do good.

Producers of the Grammys, who requested an interim agreement from the writers guild Tuesday, said that they would take “whatever action is necessary” to ensure the music awards show was held as planned.

Tensions within the guild have escalated as Warner Brothers Television, CBS Paramount Network Television, Universal Media Studios, 20th Century Fox Television and other production companies began exercising a contractual right to terminate deals with writers to develop new programs as a result of the continuing work stoppage. More than 70 production deals were cut, each representing $500,000 to $2 million in annual costs.

Studio officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they had not been cleared to speak to the news media, said deals were trimmed in part to add pressure to the writers’ camp just as directors appeared to be close to a deal.
