Guatemala Arrests Suspect In KillingsGUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) — The Guatemalan police have captured a man suspected of ordering the killings of three Salvadoran politicians early last year, the public prosecutor said Thursday. The suspect, Carlos Gutiérrez, was arrested near the border with El Salvador after investigators traced more than 60 phone calls between him and the men suspected of carrying out the killings, said the prosecutor, Álvaro Matus. The charred and bullet-riddled bodies of the three Salvadoran members of the Central American Parliament and their driver were found on Feb. 19. Four Guatemalan policemen were arrested in connection with the crime, tracked to the scene by a satellite positioning system in their car. The policemen were detained in a maximum security prison, but they were killed in their cells. The killings shed light on illegal armed groups in Guatemala’s security forces and on possible links between high-level officials and drug traffickers in the two countries.
