Group To Make Millions From Thames WindfarmWarwick Energy has been given approval by the Department of Trade and Industry to start work on its £500 million, 100-turbine farm seven miles off Thanet on the Kent coast. When completed in 2008 the facility will be one of the biggest offshore windfarms in the world, producing enough power for 240,000 homes. The approval is a coup for Warwicks three directors, led by John Sulley, who previously ran Independent Energy. Independent was launched as part of a new breed of energy suppliers designed to compete with the major players. It went into receivership in 2000 after its billing systems failed, leaving its 320,000 customers in chaos for over a year. Shareholders lost their investments and lenders, led by Barclays, lost £340 million. Investors sued as part of a class action suit in the United States and Mr Sulley and the operations director, Rob Jones, came under fire for selling £4 million worth of shares just six months before Independent collapsed. Mr Sulley and the other directors emerged unscathed and only months later set up Warwick Energy. The group is talking to banks to raise the £500 million through a mixture of debt and equity. The Thanet windfarm and others like it that are being developed are part of a government plan to provide 10 per cent of electricity from renewable resources by 2010. In line with Kyoto targets, the proportion of power produced from renewable energy is targeted to reach 20 per cent by 2020.
