Gibson Tirade Is No ApocalypseMel GIBSONS foot and his mouth have collided again in public, this time at a university in the Los Angeles suburbs, after being accused of stereotyping the Mayan culture that was the centrepiece of his controversial film, Apocalypto. Gibson swore twice at a female professor during a question-and-answer session with film students following a screening of the movie at California State University, Northridge, last week. Alicia Estrada, an assistant professor of Central American studies at the university, questioned Gibsons research for the film, a blood-soaked historical epic of the final days of the Mexican Mayan empire. In a radio interview on Friday, Professor Estrada said she cited modern studies of Mayan history. The professor, who was accompanied to the screening by members of LAs Mayan community, suggested the sources Gibson had used viewed Mayan history from a racist viewpoint. Questions about his depiction of the Mayans have followed Gibson since the release of the film last December. In this case, according to Estrada, Gibson replied, "I spent two years reading a f-ing (lot) of books". A Mayan companion of Estradas then read a statement in Spanish, demanding an apology from Gibson. As Professor Estrada translated, Gibson interrupted, saying "f- off, lady". According to Professor Estrada and a student at the screening, a campus policeman was called to escort her out. As she left, Gibson was said to have yelled at her, "This is my movie. You make your own." Professor Estradas account was not disputed by Gibsons publicist, Alan Nierob. "This person was a heckler who was rude and disrupted the event, so much so that the event organisers had to escort her out," Mr Nierob said. This is the second PR misstep in eight months for Gibson, who unleashed an anti-Semitic diatribe at a policeman in July. The American-born actor and director subsequently apologised to the Jewish community, and admitted he had a drinking problem. His public appearances to promote Apocalypto at the end of last year and since then have been relatively few and far between.
