Fury Over Obama BreachesUS STATE Department contract workers improperly looked at Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obamas passport records three times this year in what his campaign called "an outrageous breach of security and privacy". State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that on January 9, February 21 and March 14 of this year, three contract workers all individually accessed Senator Obamas passport records. "At this point in time, its our initial view that this was imprudent curiosity on the part of these three, separate individuals," Mr McCormack said. US officials said they had asked the State Departments inspector-general to conduct an independent investigation of the matter. Bill Burton, spokesman for the Obama campaign said, "Our Governments duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes. We demand to know who looked at Senator Obamas passport file, for what purpose and why it took so long for them to reveal this security breach." A spokesman for Senator Obamas Democratic rival, Senator Hillary Clinton, said of the security breach: "If its true, its reprehensible, and the Bush Administration has a responsibility to get to the bottom of it." A political firestorm erupted in 1992 after State Department officials searched Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clintons passport and citizenship files. The search coincided with Republican attacks on Mr Clinton for his role in the Vietnam anti-war movement as a student at Oxford University in 1969 and for a trip to Moscow he made at the same time. An investigation found that no laws were violated but officials exercised poor judgement. Word of the passport breach came as Senator Obama was trying to rebound after a rocky patch. He delivered a major speech this week on race relations in an effort to explain his relationship with his longtime Chicago pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Senator Clinton overtook Senator Obama in a daily Gallup tracking poll earlier this week and the latest survey showed her leading the Illinois senator 49% to 42% in the contest to select the Democratic nominee to face Republican senator John McCain in November. Meanwhile, Senator McCains campaign has suspended staff member Soren Dayton for sending a racially charged video involving Senator Obama and his controversial preacher that portrayed the former as unpatriotic. ■ New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has endorsed Senator Obamas bid for the Democratic nomination, his aides said yesterday. The governor, who held senior posts in the Clinton administration, has been courted by the Obama and Clinton camps as a leading Hispanic politician.
