Ford Will Quit Minivan MarketFord Motor said yesterday that it would abandon the minivan market in the United States by discontinuing its Freestar model and instead seek to bolster output of two new so-called crossover vehicles. Ford decided not to resume Freestar production at its plant in Oakville, Ontario, which was halted Nov. 15, a spokeswoman, Anne Marie Gattari, said yesterday. The factory will build Fords Edge and MKX crossover wagons, Ms. Gattari said. Demand for minivans has really decreased, while crossover demand has gone up, she said. Once we saw what demand for Edge and MKX was, it was the right business decision not to resume production. Minivan sales at Ford have lagged behind those at Chrysler, Toyota and Honda. Through November 2006, Ford sold 49,241 Freestars, about a fourth the sales of the Dodge Caravan by Chrysler, the top-selling minivan in the United States. Fords plan to end Freestar production was reported by Automotive News, a trade publication.
