But after playing their archrival to a 0-0 tie Saturday night in the opening game of their first-round MLS playoffs series, the Red Bulls will have to score a victory there next weekend if they want to advance to the conference finals.

Jon Conway made three saves for the Red Bulls and Matt Reis stopped five shots for the Revolution as the teams started their home-and-home, goal-aggregate series. Game two will be Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

The Red Bulls last win over the Revolution was at Giants Stadium in September 2005, and they are 0-6-3 against them since. That is of little concern to them now that their season is on the line.

"Records are records and stats are stats," said Red Bull teenage sensation Jozy Altidore. "You can get rid of what happened in the past. It all depends on what happens on the field."

Altidore had one of the Red Bulls best scoring opportunities on Saturday night, but his hard left-footed shot sailed over the crossbar in the 17th minute. His team had a few other chances to score a win, but couldnt convert them.

"Frankly, this is a little disappointing, because we controlled the game and controlled the flow," he said. "We have a game up there now, and we have to win. Its as simple as that."

Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena said New England played as if it was content to get the draw.

"We tried to throw a couple punches at them early, but we didnt do well with those (scoring) chances," Arena said. "I think they came in here with a plan, thinking that the point (for a tie) was fine. If the goal came for them, fine, but they werent attacking. It was hard to break them down playing like that."

There was some controversy in the matchs closing minutes, when Red Bulls midfielder Dane Richards got tangled with Revolution defender Avery John and John appeared to have touched the ball with his hand in the penalty area.

However, referee Jair Marrufo called Richards for a foul that angered Arena, and neither team had a chance to score for the rest of the match.
