Dragon Peter Jones’s Mobile BetDRAGONS’ DEN judge Peter Jones has seized a 22% stake in Expansys, the struggling online retailer of mobile phones and other wireless gadgets, according to bankers. Rumours of heavy buying sent the stock up 7% on Friday. Jones’s shareholding could be confirmed in a regulatory announcement as early as tomorrow. It is thought that he plans to increase his investment to 29% of the company, which is worth only £4.6m, as a precursor to a takeover. Because of weak consumer demand, Manchester-based Expansys has seen its stock tumble by 80% since its AIM flotation last April. The company, founded in 1999, raised £404,000 last week through a share placing and is at present weighing up plans to sell off a noncore division. Away from TV, Jones’s main business is Phones International, a distributor of mobile phones. The company made a profit of £7.3m in the year to April 2007, up from £6m in the previous year. However, £1.4m of bad debts held it back at the pretax line. One of his best-perform-ing divisions helps vending machines “talk” to suppliers when stock is running low.
