Cub Runneth Over With Love, They SayAN ANIMAL welfare group is suing a German zoo for the way it is human-rearing a polar bear cub, saying it would grow up a psychopath. Juergen Ortmueller, of Germanys Whale, Bear and Dolphin Protection Forum, says the baby bear, Flocke (Snowflake), ran the risk of being "as disturbed as he is" - referring to Knut, the celebrity bear of Berlin Zoo, whose mental health is being called repeatedly into question. Nearly 500 journalists from around the world were at Nuremberg Zoo yesterday to see Flocke presented for the first time since just after her birth. Animal rights people believe she is being exploited for cash, just like Knut. Reared by hand after his mother rejected him, Knut often cuts a pathetic figure at the zoo. He beckons photographers forward to take pictures of him, wails when no tourists stand before his enclosure, hugs trees for comfort and shows more and more aggression. Mr Ortmueller believes the tragic decline in Knuts mental health awaits Flocke at Nuremberg Zoo - a cub taken away from her mother in January for fear she would be eaten. His foundation has hired a celebrity German lawyer to launch a lawsuit against the zoo, claiming it is breaching the animals rights to a normal life as it rears her to become a celebrity like Knut. They want assurances that Flocke will not simply be a money-making machine like Knut has been in Berlin. They also want to be sure she will have the company of other bears as soon as possible. "Knut is a psychopath, and there is every danger that Flocke will be one too," Mr Ortmueller said. "Knut will never have sex because he is too disturbed. He doesnt know what a female smells like." One of Knuts keepers said last month the bear was addicted to fame.
