Crackdown On Xbox Gamer CheatsMicrosoft is cracking down on Xbox Live users artificially bumping up their "Gamerscore" achievements, warning any cheaters would be publicly humiliated and have their accounts reset. On Xbox Live - the online component of the Xbox 360 that allows gamers to compete and communicate with each other - players can build their Gamerscore and Achievements list by playing through games and completing certain objectives. But some players have managed to artificially boost their Gamerscore by unlocking objectives without actually playing the games. The hacks, which involve manipulating the players save files and account information, do not make the player more competitive in games but the higher score gives them significant bragging rights. Legitimate players have long complained of being bumped down the Gamerscore leaderboard by cheats. In October last year, Microsoft promised "bad things will happen" to those caught inflating their scores, and today it announced the results of its crackdown in a blog post by the director of programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hryb (who goes by the online handle Major Nelson). Hryb, who today took action against "the most serious offenders", said those caught cheating would have their Gamerscore reset to zero, be unable to regain all previously obtained achievements and "be clearly labelled as a cheater for the community to view on xbox.com". Specifically, those caught cheating will have "Im a dirty cheater" plastered on their online Xbox Live profiles. It is unclear whether any Australian Xbox Live users were banned but a local spokesman said the warning against cheating applied to all of its 10 million users worldwide. Those identified as cheaters have no way to appeal. Microsoft said it used "specific and automated criteria" to seek out players "who have used external means to earn achievements without really playing the game".
