Chinese Under Fire As US Bans 23 Toothpaste BrandsA BAN on imports of more than 20 brands of toothpaste has added to alarm across North America over the safety of food and other imports from China. The US Food and Drug Administration has released a list of 23 contaminated toothpaste products. Canadian authorities earlier told consumers not to use the toothpastes, which had been found to contain an ingredient diethylene glycol that may cause nausea, abdominal pain, kidney failure and even coma and death when swallowed. Canadian authorities also warned consumers to discard toothbrushes that had been exposed to the contaminated pastes. The FDA has stalled the import of five types of seafood from China following concerns about the uncontrolled use of antibiotics in high-intensity fish farming. Concerns have also been raised about heavy-metal contamination of agricultural products. Recent scares also include the discovery of lead-based paint on Thomas the Tank Engine toys, automotive tyres that do not meet safety standards and toxic pet food that resulted in the deaths of animals in the US in March. Sally Greenberg, senior counsel of Washington-based advocacy group Consumers Union, said China lagged a century behind the US in creating a regulatory environment for food and the manufacturing industry. "You have this engine of capitalism thats just producing the gamut of consumer products at breakneck speed," Ms Greenberg said. "Theres this plethora of products thats not meeting the safety standards that Americans or Australians or Canadians have come to expect."
