Business Big Shot: Jeffrey KindlerMr Kindler, 51, was appointed chairman and chief executive of Pfizer last year. Born in Florida and raised in New Jersey, Mr Kindler, a former editor of the Harvard Law Review, began his career as a lawyer at the Federal Communications Commission. After a stint as a law clerk to the US Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr, Mr Kindler moved to General Electric as vice-president of litigation and legal policy. Then he joined McDonalds as executive vice-president and general counsel. At the fast-food giant he was instrumental in establishing a pro bono legal services programme that became a model across corporate America. Mr Kindler made his move into management at McDonalds as president of partner brands, a role in which he oversaw more than 50,000 employees at chains including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Pret A Manger. He joined Pfizer in 2002 as executive vice-president and general counsel with responsibility for the legal division. He was named vice-chairman in 2005, joining the companys four-person executive committee and assuming responsibility for Pfizers corporate affairs division. However, analysts argue that the cost-cuts that Mr Kindler is expected to announce will take Pifzer only so far. What is really needed, they say, is a new tonic that can pep up Pfizers top line rather like Viagra did in 1998.
