Beslan Protest Group To Stand Trial

Moscow Russian prosecutors have laid extremism charges against campaigners who claim that senior security officials bungled a 2004 school hostage rescue attempt in which 333 children and adults died, the campaign group said. Islamists seized more than 1,000 people in Beslan, southern Russia, starting a three-day siege that ended in carnage. Half the dead were children.

Golos Beslana (Voice of Beslan), which is led by women who lost relatives in the siege, said that the charges had been filed over a 2005 appeal that the group issued to politicians in Europe and the United States in which it claimed that the Kremlin was hiding the truth.

The trial is to start on Monday in Nazran, the capital of Ingushetia. Beslan is in North Ossetia, the neighbouring region. “They are carrying out an order from Moscow,” Ella Kesayeva, who co-chairs Golos Beslana, said. “What do Ingush prosecutors have to do with a public organisation registered in North Ossetia?” Ingush prosecutors declined to comment.
