Anorexics Snared In Web Trap

DANGEROUS eating disorders are being promoted and glorified on popular social networks such as Facebook and YouTube - and health experts feel powerless to stop it.

Members of groups such as Get Thin or Die Trying and Im Anorexic So Stop Feeding Me swap tips and tricks on how to lose weight, compete to shed the most kilograms and motivate each other to continue their often-deadly addiction.

Nearly all have "thinspiration" galleries featuring pictures of emaciated women with bare, collapsed stomachs and protruding bones,"before and after" shots of celebrities such as anorexia-suffers Mary-Kate Olsen and Amy Winehouse and motivational quotes such as "nothing tastes as good as thin feels".

Eating Disorders Foundation chief executive Amanda Jordan said it was almost impossible to regulate the content of online "pro-ana" and "pro-mia" (bulimia) groups, leaving health professionals in a constant battle to prevent the messages reaching a potential audience of millions.

"There should be attempts at the flagrant and more damaging [groups] but its like butting your head against brick wall to try to control cyberspace," she said.

Child and adolescent psychiatrist Sloane Madden, who is the director of the Eating Disorders Program at The Childrens Hospital at Westmead, said people with eating disorders often felt very isolated.

"They go to sites like Facebook for support but when the sites are unregulated its very difficult to know what kind of advice is being given to them and if these sites are promoting weight and idolising low body weight that can be detrimental," he said.

He said an antidote could be the creation of professionally funded sites overseen by a mental health expert, which provide a safe, alternative forum for people with eating disorders to help and support each other.

Sharon Hodgson, 30, moderated pro-eating disorder websites until her recovery from anorexia 18 months ago, when she founded a "post-pro ana" website and forum, WeBiteBack.com.

A Facebook spokesman said: "Many Facebook groups relate to controversial topics; this alone is not a reason to disable a group."
