‘Crumbling’ World Cup Stadium Had Been Criticised Before Death Of 7 Fans

SÃO PAULO Rescue workers can be seen through a hole in the stands at the Fonte Nova football stadium in Salvador. At least seven fans died when the three-metre-wide section of terracing collapsed and they fell 15 metres (49ft) to the ground below.

The 56-year-old stadium was being considered for renovation before the collapse after an association of architects and engineers identified it as the worst of 29 venues in Brazil. The report carried pictures of crumbling support beams under the stands and concluded that Fonte Nova was in a “pitiful state, [with] no comfort or security for users”. The survey was conducted because Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup, and the association wanted to give authorities an idea of what improvements were needed. Salvador will almost certainly host some of the games at the 2014 tournament, which was awarded to Brazil by Fifa last month.

The secretary of sports for Bahia state said that the stadium had undergone renovations in the past, but that none of them dealt with its structural integrity.

About 60,000 people were at the stadium for a match between Bahia and Vila Nova and many did not learn of the tragedy until afterwards. (AP)
