Al Gore Calls For Climate ‘mobilisation’OSLO Al Gore received his Nobel Peace Prize yesterday, declaring that America would “stand accountable before history” if it failed to take action to combat climate change. “It is time to make peace with the planet,” he said in a speech in Oslo. “We must mobilise our civilisation with the urgency and resolve that has previously been seen only when nations mobilised for war.” Mr Gore added: “It should be absolutely clear that it is the two largest CO2 emitters [China and the US] — and, most of all, my own country — that will need to make the boldest moves. Both countries should stop using the other’s behaviour as an excuse for stalemate and instead develop an agenda for mutual survival.” His remarks came as governments met in Bali, Indonesia, to work on a new international treaty on carbon emissions to replace Kyoto by 2012. Mr Gore will join the talks tomorrow. The former vice-president to Bill Clinton received the Nobel prize for his work to raise awareness of climate change. He shared it with Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN’s panel on climate change.
