Advertising Splurge Cost Barack Obama More Than $11m

Barack Obama spent more than $11 million (£5.5 million) buying 10,000 television advertising slots in Pennsylvania and still lost the primary by a double-digit margin.

His spending in the past month was more than any Democratic candidate lavished on all their TV advertising in the entirety of the 2004 nomination race. The strategy appears to have been to bankrupt Hillary Clinton while doing his best to finish her off in the Keystone state. In both respects, he failed. But Mrs Clinton probably wishes she had his problems.

According to end of March returns released on Sunday night, Mr Obama has $43 million cash for the remaining nine contests and only $660,000 in debts. She has debts of $10.3 million and only $9.5 million available to cover them, leaving a shortfall of $800,000. This vast financial disparity must eventually work to Mr Obama’s advantage – and, at the very least, symbolises Mrs Clinton’s weakness – but for the moment it is being used as stick with which to beat him.

In her victory speech on Tuesday, Mrs Clinton made a point of telling her ecstatic crowd that she had won despite being outspent by a margin of almost three to one. “He broke every spending record in this state trying to knock us out of this race,” she said. “Well, the people of Pennsylvania had other ideas.” She then held out the begging bowl, asking her supporters to donate online. “We can only keep winning if we can keep competing,” she said, “the future of this campaign is in your hands.” Before midnight, her campaign was reporting it had received $2.5 million – 80 per cent from new donors – “our best night ever”. Yesterday there were claims that the total had risen to $10 million.
